Observing National Foster Care Month every May at UC Merced
National Foster Care Month is observed each year in May. The Foster Youth Awareness Month (#FYAM) initiative began at UC Merced in May 2019 to elevate lived experiences, build campus and statewide community, and drive meaningful support for foster youth.

Program Goals
- Increase Understanding Deepen awareness and knowledge of the lived experiences of foster youth.
- Build Community Connection Bring foster youth together to foster belonging and a supportive network.
- Raise Regional & Statewide Awareness Amplify student voices within the Merced community and beyond.
- Actionable Allyship Identify at least two concrete ways to support the foster youth community.
Campaign History
Evolution
- 2020 Social Media & Storytelling Campaign Launched the dedicated #FYAM website and ran a social media campaign featuring artwork, poetry, and stories from foster youth across California—reaching over 10,000 individuals.
- 2021 Statewide Engagement & Training Expanded outreach across CCCs, UCs, and CSUs with virtual vision board workshops, first GSP Info Sessions, and Ally Training for UC Merced faculty, staff, and partners.
